Emergency Lighting Testing
Sheffield.
An Escape Route Needs Light When Power Fails.
Request A QuoteEmergency lighting testing checks the lighting people rely on when the normal supply fails. We help Sheffield businesses arrange functional and duration testing, investigate defects and organise records for commercial escape routes and working areas.

What Testing Tells You
A luminaire can appear healthy under normal power yet fail to illuminate when its battery is needed. Testing simulates loss of the normal supply to check operation. Duration testing examines whether the system can continue to operate for its specified period, rather than simply flash on at the start.
The test record should identify failed fittings and any areas that could not be checked. A functional test alone does not demonstrate that the escape route has adequate lighting coverage. If the layout has changed or provision is uncertain, a design review may be needed alongside maintenance testing.
Planning A Test Around Occupancy
A duration test can leave batteries partly or fully depleted until they recharge. Choose a test window that accounts for when people will next rely on the system. Consider late shifts, security staff and events rather than assuming an empty office means an empty building.
Agree access to test switches, distribution boards and central battery equipment where applicable. Automated systems still need records reviewed and faults addressed. Tell the contractor about sensitive equipment, tenant restrictions and any site rules that apply when normal lighting circuits are interrupted.
A Practical Testing Process
Before the visit, collect the lighting layout, previous test records and details of known failed fittings. Identify the specified system duration where records establish it. The contractor should confirm the test scope and arrangements for any loss of lighting that could affect staff or other building users.
During testing, fittings and relevant indicators are checked using an appropriate method. Results are recorded against identifiable locations. The handover should list failures, explain access limitations and identify any follow-up needed, including replacement batteries, fittings or investigation of supply and control arrangements.
When Testing Reveals A Design Issue
New partitions, storage racks and changes to exit routes can leave an older lighting layout unsuitable. A working luminaire behind a new obstruction may contribute little to safe escape. Raised platforms, changes of level and plant areas deserve attention when the building use changes.
Do not assume that adding a brighter fitting resolves every concern. Design decisions should take account of the escape route, relevant hazards and system arrangement. Where there is no reliable original design, agree how suitability will be reviewed so routine test results are not mistaken for a design assessment.
Allowing For Lighting Test Costs
The number of fittings, access height, system arrangement and the quality of the asset register affect the work. Self-test fittings, central battery systems and local test switches involve different procedures. Restricted testing windows or several separate buildings can increase the coordination needed.
Provide an approximate fitting count and say whether you need functional testing, a duration test or fault investigation. Mention missing records and any previous failure report. Ask the quotation to describe the test, documentation and any exclusions, with corrective work priced separately unless explicitly included.
The Framework
For The Work.
For emergency lighting in Sheffield commercial buildings, BS 5266-1:2025 provides the relevant code of practice for premises. Testing and maintenance should follow the system’s applicable requirements and manufacturer guidance. The Fire Safety Order creates the wider duty to maintain suitable fire precautions.
Reference: BSI Standard Overview.
A standard is a technical reference, not a guarantee that a particular building meets every legal duty. Agree the applicable edition and inspection scope with the competent specialist, particularly when existing equipment is being retained or a building is being altered.
Before You Book.
How Do Short Lighting Checks Differ From Full Duration Tests?
Emergency lighting functional testing checks whether fittings operate when the normal supply fails. Duration testing checks operation over the system’s specified period. Both results need recording and failures need action.
The test plan should also consider battery recharge, so people are not left depending on a depleted system during subsequent occupancy.
Does A Passed Lighting Test Confirm The Design Is Suitable?
A passed emergency lighting test shows the tested equipment operated within the test scope. It does not automatically confirm that the layout provides adequate lighting for today’s escape routes. New partitions, racks or changes of use may need a separate design review.
Ask for any coverage concerns to be recorded alongside equipment failures.
